Home security is one facet of life that we all don't really want to have but can't live without. The security of our homes and our well being is something that will always be of utmost concern and a matter to be frequently researched and updated. Although advice on home security can vary greatly depending on many factors like where you live and the size and structure of your house, there are still some basics that we can do to keep our properties and loved ones safe. As you are reading this article on the Internet, you obviously know how to do some research; just type in a search term in Google and presto! This is probably the best advice you can get - Learn to do research and to ask questions, lots of questions if you have to. Home security means the methods used to protect you, your family and your material possessions. The more you know, the more secure you become. Just remember not to get too fanatical about it and let these matters take over your life. Sort through the material you collet on home security and determine what is and what is not relevant. Once this is done apply the information to your own needs and determine what needs fixing or improving in some way. One question that floats around a lot is -"How secure is secure? Can my home be so full of home security technology that no one can ever break in??? If someone really wants to take your possessions they will find a way. You just must put it all into perspective. There are ways you can protect your property without turning it into Fort Knox. This article as as other articles on this website will cover some home security concerns, and we will try to provide you with the tips, tricks, techniques and suggestions you can use to improve your security needs. Some security needs that can be met may cost you nothing at all and others will have expenses attached. The "no frills", "no cost" variety of home security advice deals with situations when we simply forget to take preventive security measures and instead do something that is completely insecure. A good example of this is when many of us still don’t follow the age old advice of not hiding a spare key too near the door. If you hide your keys anywhere near your entrance way, you will compromise the security of your home. It doesn't matter whether you hide them under door mat; above the door frame; under rocks or other location near the door, you are reducing the security of your home. These are places that burglars' will look first before attempting their break-in. Even the act of hiding the keys can trigger a burglary if someone "just happens" to see you. There are many burglars that just drive around looking for a house to break into and see someone hiding their house key. This tells the would be burglar the house is unprotected and without too many obstacles to hinder his progress in stealing your goods. Another thing to watch for are spare keys that are hidden within the house. More free and simple home security advice is actually never free and never simple. Many of us still forget to lock our own own doors and windows. Before we know what hits us, our homes get burglarized and our lives tragically altered. An open door or window is like an open invitation for a would be burglar. We all know the importance of locking up our properties. We just simply forget, or are too busy, or maybe we don't care. When we drive our cars, we must always pay attention to the road and our surroundings. The same should apply to our homes. You never what's going to happen until it's too late. There are situations when you do need or want to keep your windows open (usually when someone is inside). There are still preventive measures you could take that would still provide for a secure home as well as provide fresh air. Windows are manufactured, for example, that can lock when opend only half way or less. The opening would be too small for a burglar to enter. Of course, whether or not anyone is home, both doors and windows should always be locked. If you have an alarm system, this should always be set before leaving. By remembering, or rather, by not forgetting to do these simple preventative security measures, the protection of you, your family and your possessions will be more assured. Here's more advice that should help aleviate some home security worries. Pay attention! No, I don't mean to this article. I mean to pay attention to your own surroundings. Make sure you can see what is going on around your own home. Tree branches that hide your yard from a direct line of sight could help a burglar with a hiding place. Not only may it be better to cut some of the branches to ensure a clear view of your yard, but it may also help the visual appeal of your yard. Make sure you can see everything happening outside. If you can see someone approaching your house in advance, you will be more prepared to react. If your car is parked outside, you should also be able to see it from your window. Don't forget to adjust the motion detector lights, though. You don't need to have the lights turning on and off all night just because someone walks past your house on the public sidewalk. My own front light would go on all the time when someone wopuld drive by my house. Sometimes motion detector lights can be a nuisance if not adjusted properly. Another thing that many people do that they should try avoid doing is to not attract to much attention to yourself and your yard. If a burglar wants to break into your home, he would probably like to know in advance whether or not it's worth the trouble to burglarize your house. An expensive car that is not parked inside the garage could very well attract a would be thief. Always park your vehicle in your garage if at all possible. If you have expensive items at home, keep them away from windows. Why make your valuable possessions visible to a burglar if you don't have to. A very good idea is to have curtains covering your windows. These can be adjusted as needed. Another great idea for windows is to have them coated with reflective plastic film. Not only will burglars not be able to see through these reflective window treatments, but it can also save on energy costs as a side benefit. When was the last time you purchased something expensive and simply threw away the empty box it came in. I was guilty of that too. Why are you advertising your property for all to see. If recycling these containers is important to you, there are things you can do. Most importantly, you want to conceal the markings on the box of the purchased item. Rather than just folding the box for recyclying, take the box apart and fold it so you can't see any markings. Don’t simply throw away the empty box outside. Throw it away, or rather recycle it in such a way that people outside don’t see it or would not understand what type of item this box is from. Speaking of "throwing away" - You should also never throw away your paperwork that may have important personal or financial information on it. If you want to discard your credit card statements or check copies, you should first make good use of a quality paper shredder. The most important advice I could give for this coming Christmas holiday season is to remember that it is a Burglar's most busy season as well. Be vigilant and learn what to do to increase your home security so you can enjoy a safe holiday. There is another article on this site that have some great Christmas Time security Tips.
