Home Security and Alarm MonitoringHow to Increase the Security of Your HomeHome security and alarm monitoring is an issue that is so versatile yet very important, you will find issues dealing with this subject in all parts of the world and in all aspects of life. It all depends on the way you take it and how much you learn from it. There are as many different ways to protect your home as there are books on the subject. So many break-in attempts have been made that information is abound in the hopes of minimizing possible theft attempts. A lot of different technological equipment and other advances have been created to fill this great need. Home security will always be a part of our lives. For many home based entrepreneurs, personal as well as business lives are intertwined. By asking yourself - how much are monthly alarm fees for businesses and homes? - you may have added an extra monthly expense but you have also increased the security of your revenue producing business enterprise. In this article we will talk about home security alarm monitoring: both alarm systems and alarm monitoring services. Installation of any alarm system will greatly minimize the chances for a burglar to be successful in his break-in attempt. Alarm systems with a monitoring service attached is designed not only to prevent possible theft attempts but also to stop break-ins that are already in progress by notifying the police department. There are a lot of different alarm security systems that are available for sale on the market. The monitoring services attached to these systems usually have a monthly service fee. Alarm systems can range from the simple low-cost alarms to advanced more expensive automated systems with video cameras and motion detectors. The simplest alarm system is designed to detect unlawful entry into the homeowners house. A breach of entry will trigger the alarm's siren and notify everyone around that a theft attempt is in full progress. Many installed alarm systems also notify the closest police department (or other authorities like firemen or medical personnel) through the company that offers various alarm monitoring services. What's good about this is that the alarm monitoring company will try to notify you first if the alarm breaches. Only if they are unable to notify you are authorities called. This is a great help, especially in the case of false alarms, like if you don't turn your alarm off in time before the alarm goes off. These companies will usually offer the whole home security alarm package including the monitoring service as well as installation. Signing up for security monitoring services doesn't have to be an expensive proposition. In the case of a monitored service, installation may even be free as long as you agree to certain monthly monitoring charges. This cost can also be fairly low and worth the minimal expense when you consider the security and safety of you and your property. There are companies that charge less then $10 per month for monitoring services. In my opinion, $25-50 per month for a good home security alarm monitoring service is money well spent. If you have a business or other property you may be able to get a bit of a discount and have the peace of mind of full coverage. Fees may also vary depending on the area, kind of like house taxes. Most of my friends and neighbors pay about that much for their alarm monitoring system and they are very satisfied. The benefits of signing up for an alarm monitoring service are obvious. Your home will be watched at all times, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by the security service company. If there is a breach, they will notify and dispatch a police unit when your alarm goes off. Security monitoring systems usually work by means of a standard phone line. In case of urgent situations, like when the alarm goes off, the alarm system, itself, will dial the company that is providing the monitoring service. As mentioned above, the company will usually initially try to establish contact with the owner of the house. If they can't and they determine that a break-in is in progress, the police department will be notified and dispatched. This is a standard procedure which may vary from one company to another. When I was renting a room from a homeowner friend of mine, I keyed in the wrong pass code and the alarm went off. This was last Christmas Eve. I phoned my friend on his cell to get the correct code because I triggered the alarm and need to turn it off - quick! He told me the code over the phone and stopped the alarm company from sending the police. Boy, was I lucky. If I wasn't able to contact him, I may have spent Christmas in jail. We all laughed about it, but home security is a serious business. The alarm company also told my friend that if one more "false alarm" went off, he would be charged a "false alarm fee". If you are thinking of installing one of these systems, be prepared. Security of any kind is not to be treated lightly. When you do decide to sign up for an alarm monitoring service you should search for a respectful monitoring company that offers services and at a reasonable cost. I would also look for companies that have been around for awhile. Research each company that you find and select the best one available. It might help to research through various security guides and to review current and past customer feedback. Word of mouth or testimonials from satisfied customers are always powerful reasons to choose one company over the next. An alarm monitoring service can be indispensable for vacation planners or for people who are out of their homes for most of the day. Good reliable alarm monitoring services will usually offer additional benefits to their customers like dispatching fire and medical assistance personnel (in addition to police) when it is needed. A side monetary benefit from signing up with an alarm monitoring service happens also. This benefit may offset your monthly alarm monitoring fees. This benefit stems from your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance company for any details regarding this. They will usually be able to offer you a discount on your insurance premiums if they know you have an installed an alarm monitoring system from a recognized company. You may be able to save up to 20% on your insurance payments. Please note that some insurance companies may even require the monitoring service before even providing insurance to the prospective client. Home security alarm systems were imprisoned within hard wired technology. Recent developments have paved a new road using wireless technology. The spread of wireless alarm systems have answered many a homeowners' wishes to have a system where walls wouldn't have to be torn apart. Besides, unsatisfied customers would be stuck with holes in their walls. More and more alarm monitoring companies are offering wireless services for homeowners. Dedicated cellular links allow the alarm system to contact the monitoring company even if the regular phone lines are not working or power is out. In the event the power is shut down, the system will be powered by batteries. This way, no matter what happens, the alarm system will notify the alarm service company and your home will be safe. On a side note - you should also have at least one corded phone plugged into your phone jack that does not depend on your home's electricity - I'm talking about all the wireless remote phones that you can carry anywhere throughout your yard. These phones are a great convenience. But for added extra safety, make sure you have at least one regular phone. This last piece of advice has nothing to do with security but of saving some money on your monitored home alarm system. Check with the security company and see if they will offer you an extra deal if you buy both their alarm systems and sign up for their monthly alarm monitoring service through them. With this in mind, remember that the longer you have been a customer with them, the better your chances of a successful negotiation.
