Home Security and Information SecurityKeep Your Personal Information SecureYou may not believe this but there is a direct corrrelation between both Home Security and Information Security. Here's a clue - identity theft. It is more rampant then ever before. Like all things in life, good must be taken with bad. Hopefully this article will help shed some light on the issue of being able to protect the uniqueness of your life (in other words, your very own identity). If not you could risk heavy monetary losses when someone else, that you don't even know, signs your checks with your signature and withdraws your money from your bank. We have been in the midst of an information hungry world for some time now. But the era of information technology in a computer and Internet generated world has taken it to a new level. The need to access information along with the ability to protect it at the same time has catapulted us into a new age. Of all the possessions you have, your identification is the most valuable, whether you know it or not. Your identification is everything that makes you...you...from your birth certificate, drivers licence and especially your credit cards. Without your identification you,...well...you just don't exist anymore. The ability to protect your own information, your identity, depends on how much information you know from research. By lacking in that knowledge your identity becomes a risk. Some burglars like breaking into houses not so much to steal your possessions, but rather to steal your personal information like signatures, checks, credit cards, etc. They will look on or around your bedroom for your wallet or bank information. You think not? The burglar could break into your home, steal your computer and retrieve the information and sell it to a competitor company for sometimes large sums of money. If you have a key position with your company with access to information that burglars' may think lucrative, you and your home could very well be on their "list". Understand the value of the information you keep, whether in your own home or at your place of business. Use and take preventive security steps to protect this information. You should also try and make sure that any leakage of information not actually trigger a burglary attempt. Information is very valuable and needs security as much as yourself, your family and your home. The growth of the computer and the convenience it brings to us continues to expand. Many of us store personal and business information on our personal computer. The first step to protect this information is to protect your computer. The general home security steps that you take to protect your house will also protect your computer. The better your home is protected the better the information in your computer is protected. Remember, before a burglar can access the information on your PC, the thief needs to break into your home. This is where a quality home security system installation shines by stopping their attempts. If you have a laptop computer you will need to take additional security steps to protect you computer. Because a laptop is smaller it is easier to conceal as well as faster to steal. If you carry your computer to work with you, ensure you can lock it to your desk and make sure the door is locked behind you if you're going to a short meeting. I remember arriving at work a couple of years back and was told that someone walked in earlier through the front door of the business and walked out with a laptop computer from an office close to the entrance. The laptop was unsecured and the door was wide open. The executive was working on a project for about a month. He lost everything. There are still things you can do to protect the information stored in your computer whether or not your computer is stolen. You should make sure you are the only person that can log in to the computer with a login username and password. A proper computer security system needs to be installed. If you don't understand how computer security works, ask for help at work, especially if you are storing company related information on your home computer. Many medium and large companies have their own information technology department.A representative of this department can help you to install a proper computer security system. Computer security guides can be consulted or even a technical representative of the store where you purchased the computer can help. The most important point is that you need to install a system that will eliminate any possibility of your valuable information from being stolen from your computer. Even if you don't have a security system installed there are still things you can do. If you have a file on you computer that you don't want anyone to see, just set a password. In Microsoft Word you can set a password to open a file and a separate password to edit the file. In the paragraphs above we assumed that a burglar has to commit the physical act of breaking into your house and steal your homecomputer to get your information. But that doesn't have to happen. A clever thief can still break into your computer without breaking into your home. He or she can just simply hack into your computer system from outside. Heck, they can even be in another country. Your computer security system should protect you from this danger by making sure your firewalls are up to snuff and your antivirus programs and adware/spyware filters are in check and constantly updated. Lastly, just because you got a promotion and use your computer for important promotion do not advertise this fact too much or the wrong person may find out. When you are talking with friends, neighbors or other people, never mention that you keep some important information on your computer."Loose lips sinks ships!" Even if you keep printouts of this important information, keep these printouts in a secure location and don't tell anyone where it is. A stranger may overhear your conversation without your knowledge and use it to their advantage. The less other people know, the better. Try to limit this knowledge to your direct family and trusted (and authorized) colleagues. Even with this don't let too many people at all about how to access this information with your login username and password. By following these steps you will be on your way to ensure that both your home and personal or business information are protected and secure. Advances in technology and the prevention of information theft is an important issue in this new century. To continue the security of your information, you need to continue to do research and to listen to these advances so that you can apply them to your own situation.
