Tips To Help You Optimize the Security of Your Home

Optimize the Security of Your Home with some Practical Tips

Having a home security system installed in our homes is no big deal anymore. It is still a growing industry only because the criminal mind continues to seek new and crafty ways to break into our already secure homes. Although a burglar prefers to break into homes that do not have a security system in place, they are also very skilled and very clever at bypassing active alarm systems. The home security alarm industry needs to be continually vigilent.

To optimize your home security system means to enhance your security by adding exta bells and whistles that could thwart attempts at invasions of your property. The more bells and whistles you want the more expensive it gets. Components like window and door sensors cost money. You must carefully choose and test which components are best for you.

It really doesn't matter anymore where you live. It seems that where ever we live; where ever we travel and what ever we do, we all need a certain level of security and peace of mind just to survive. Many people still think they need less security if they live in an apartment, but that is just not so anymore. You read about it in the newspapers all the time of violent breakins at appartment buildings throughout this entire planet.

Public safety services still do provide excellent protection, however many people still actually put their lives on the line by depending on other people or the technology they provide.

Just to digress for a moment, a few years ago I was at a major downtown crosswalk when a lady decided to cross the road as soon as the light turned green. A bus decided, at the same time, to run the light. The bus driver, although in the wrong, honked his horn while she was crossing. I quickly grabbed her by the collar and pulled her back just in time. I looked at her and said sarcastically - "Didn't your kids ever teach you to look both ways before crossing the road?" Her reply was - "Well the light turned green and so I had a right to cross the road and the bus driver should have stopped." I scratched my head. I looked at her and said in return - "You mean you would put your life at risk just because a green light said it was OK?" She walked away.

DO NOT RELY SOLY ON OTHER PEOPLE AND WHAT THEY CAN DO FOR YOU. TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR OWN LIFE. Remember, there are more homes and apartment buildings than there are officers, paramedics and firemen combined. The people that work for public safety agencies cannot be everywhere at the same time.

Back to the subject of optimizing your home security, it should also be understood that not all neighborhoods are created equal. Some areas are just more susceptible to breakins than others. Thieves know that more upscale developments probably have home security alarm systems installed along with stronger doors and windows. They would rather prefer and easier way to pilfer your possessions. But please - Do not rely on this fact. I don't care where you live; do not let your guard down. Your property only needs to be breached one time to change your life forever.

Burglars rely on many different factors in determining whether or not your property is a possible target. Your job in enhancing your security, enough to deter an invasion, is to determine what these factors may be. Did you forget to set your alarm before leaving the house? Or, did you leave your window open before leaving? How about this - Did you forget to lock your front door, before deciding to work in you garden? Are you still dumb enough to hide your keys under your mat or in a flower pot by the back door? Burglars love the fact that people are just so forgetful or complacent about their security. Be vigilant at all times!!! Above all please do not say to yourself that - 'it will never happen to me. As I said above, it only needs to happen ONE TIME.

If you do like the convience that technology can provide in enhancing your home security alarm system, you may also consider using a keypad entry or a fingerprint enabled door lock system. This may help aleviate the problems associated when people tend to forget where their keys are.

Have you taught your children not to talk to strangers? Do you think that it only applies to your children and not you? Think again. You never know if or when that stranger is actually just scoping your home to determine the difficuly level of ransacking your home.

Three more quick final tips to optimize the security of your home are as follows:

1. Don't make a target out of yourself by displaying your valuables in such a way as to be visible through open windows.

2. Many thieves are also put off if they see any pets through any of the windows, especially the front picture window. This is not necessarily true. I mention this only because I met an ex-burglar, just released from prison, who told me that if he sees any pets at all he will stay away. Apparently it has something to do with DNA. Once a thief has been apprehended by the police and processed for evidence, any DNA evidence found on them from pet hairs during subsequent invasions may lenghten their sentences.

3. Finally, Practice unpredictability. If you have a routine of leaving and returning to your home everyday in the same manner and at the same time, a would be thief could plan their breakins much more effectively. By changing your routes and schedules a burglar is much more uncertain about whether or not they will be caught.
